Life update.

A lot has changed the past couple of years, from coming back from abroad, new jobs, new ventures and new commitments.

I recently finished the South Korean crime drama @maskgirlnetflixtv #MASKGIRL on @netflixuk and I must say, this is one of the best dramas I've seen in a while. The short length of only 7 episodes allows the story to not drag and pace itself well over the course of each of those hours, with every episode focussing on a different character whose individual stories involving the titular "Mask Girl" all intertwine into the bigger the picture. The style, soundtrack, cinematography are a treat for the eyes and ears and the performances are excellent. Highly recommend for anybody looking for their next crime fix.

Also super cool title sequence.

So I watched Netflix's #BEEF during my daily commutes and just a few thoughts, I suppose:

I was very excited for this show being a fan of both #StevenYeun and #AliWong as well as #A24. About two people who get into a road-rage incident with one another and become sworn enemies, 'Beef' is marketed as a comedy and is certainly a humourous affair but a black one with plenty of serious themes throughout.

What I didn't expect however is how the show would end up. The humour takes a bit of a back seat in the second half of the season in favour of thrills and genuine white knuckle events but somehow all that never feels out of place. The off-beat comedy sets the tone early on letting the viewer know that this ain't no sitcom style shit.

'Beef' also further demonstrates that comedians can sometimes make the best dramatic actors with Ali Wong giving a career-defining performance as the rich, pathological liar Amy Lau and Steven Yeun shines as the narcissistic Danny Cho. Both pretty terrible people and yet you can't help but sympathize with them. The rest of the cast are fantastic also.

Great show. Highly recommend.

Contrary to most viewers' assumption, writer and director Jim Jarmusch did not name the two main characters directly after Adam and Eve from the Bible. Rather, he was referring to Mark Twain's satirical work "The Diaries of Adam and Eve", which has rarely been published in its complete form. Jarmusch told a Hollywood Reporter interviewer that "It wasn't until shooting the film, that I realized everyone's first impression will be the Biblical reference. Whoops. It's too late now. What can I do?" Twain's is one of the faces visible on Adam's wall of framed portraits in the movie.
